Kort sagt ville en måde være at kopiere den nye aktivfil til den passende placering, mens du beholder en kopi af den originale databasefil, kan du derefter anvende opdateringerne for effektivt at bevare brugerens data til den nyligt kopierede database. MEN kun hvis appen opgraderes til den specifikke ændring, og hvis databasen eksisterer.
Hvis databasen ikke eksisterer, skal standardkopien af aktivfilen udføres.
Her er et eksempel på, hvordan dette kunne gøres.
Dette eksempel er ret stærkt afhængig af rutiner, der tillader administration og en vis forespørgsel af filen i aktivmappen og eller selve databasefilen.
En klasse nemlig DBAssetHandler.java tager højde for ovenstående (samt en evne til at udtrække user_version AKA databaseversionen, når du bruger SQLiteOpenHelper).

- pev1.db - den oprindelige eksisterende database som beskrevet ovenfor
- pev1mod.db - den ændrede (ekstra kolonne, UNIK begrænsning og den ekstra række).
Databasehjælperen (en underklasse af SQLOpenHelper) nemlig PEV2DBHelper.java , Det skal bemærkes, at databaseversionen (DBVERSION ) bruges til at styre og adskiller sig som sådan fra APK-versionen (som kan ændres hyppigere end DB)
- Der blev fundet problemer under forsøg på at bruge onUpgrade metode, derfor en alternativ tilgang, at få databasernes user_version fra filen i stedet for via en SQLiteDatabase.
